Bone loss often speeds up around menopause, usually without any symptoms until a fracture happens. Here's what actually helps protect your bones.
Bone density often declines more quickly in the years around menopause as estrogen levels fall. Weight-bearing exercise, adequate calcium and vitamin D, and a bone density test at the right time are the main ways to catch and address this early, since osteoporosis typically causes no symptoms until a bone breaks.
Osteoporosis is a condition where bones become weak and more prone to breaking. For many women, the process begins developing a year or two before menopause, and low estrogen levels afterward are a significant risk factor. Around the time of menopause, it's common to lose bone mass at an accelerated rate for several years, often without any noticeable symptoms. That's what makes bone health easy to overlook until a fracture happens.
Some women are at higher risk than others. Being smaller or thinner-boned is associated with greater risk, simply because there's less bone density to lose. A family history of osteoporosis or hip fracture, particularly in a parent, also raises your own risk. Age itself is a factor too, independent of menopause.
Screening guidelines generally recommend a bone density (DEXA) test for women 65 and older, and testing earlier for postmenopausal women who have risk factors that raise their fracture risk. A nutritious diet with adequate calcium and vitamin D, along with regular weight-bearing exercise, supports bone strength and also helps prevent the falls that lead to fractures. Depending on your individual risk, medication may also be part of a bone health plan.

Bone health is easy to deprioritize because it's silent, until it isn't. It's part of the routine conversation, not an afterthought.
